Shoemaker's Pine Pitch
Shoemaker's Pine Pitch
Old fashioned Shoemaker’s Pine Pitch
The genuine article, now very hard to source, this is 100% pure pine pitch, melted with a minute amount of oil to reduce brittleness and sprinkled in talcum to avoid sticking to wrapper.
Extremely tacky, it is used to attach bristle to thread and will produce a very resistant waxed end.
Dependent on season, heat over a small flame before applying to thread and bristle.
Sold by unit of 30g
Practical note:
In chemical terms, this is not considered a solid but an extremely slow moving liquid. For best use, it must be kept in something malleable such as a piece of paper, flexible plastic or leather. If left on flat surface or in a jar, it will spread over time and tack to anything, making things impractical.
Additionally:
This can also be added to a mixture of beeswax, colophony and tallow to produce a traditional brown thread wax.
Composition: 1 part pine pitch, 3 parts beeswax, 2 parts colophony & a ‘fingernails’s worth’ of tallow
