Extremely rare lastmaker’s stock knife by English workshop Henry Carter.
The workshop was located in the village of Highburton, West Yorkshire and specialised in wood carving and hand tools.
The stock knife is hooked to a work-top and its tip used as a leverage axis. The chamfer of the blade is on the underside to allow concave cutting.
It is used to reduce bulk (‘stock’) on a last to transform the rough last to a more refined shape before finishing with the rasp.
