Antique Plough Gauge by famous French workshop Blanchard Paris, active in producing leather working tools for over 200 years.
The Blanchard workshop has made a name for the beauty of its tools over two centuries of activity and this item is a hallmark of their range.
Mechanical knife used for cutting strips of leather, fitted with 10 cm wide stem ruler.
There are two parameter settings: the first to set the width of the strip of leather by allowing movement across the measure dial.
The second is a cross bar roller which moves up or down to secure the leather according to thickness, actioned by the oval swivel.
The blade is removable to be sharpened and honed.
Stamped: Blanchard Paris on base and blade
Entirely made of solid brass and steel.
The knife fitted with pear-tree handle and steel ferrule.
Base of the swivel has seen some repair at one stage. (see photo)
Note: for best operation and adjustment of this tool, a flat head screw-driver and thin rod (or thick nail) are requisite to make full use of all adjustment parameters
